Here at Killarney Metals, the powder-coated pans we manufacture are engineered for durability, protection, and long-term performance. Whether you’re using them under appliances, in commercial facilities, or industrial environments, our pans are built to last. Still, even the toughest finishes can sometimes suffer minor scratches or chips during installation or regular use. The good news? Restoring their appearance is simple and effective. Why Do Touch Ups Matter?
Powder-coated steel is highly resistant to corrosion and wear, but once scratched or chipped, the exposed metal is more vulnerable to rust and degradation. For pans that serve as protective barriers against leaks and spills, maintaining the integrity of the finish helps ensure ongoing performance while also preserving a clean, professional look.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the steps to touch up scratches or chips on your powder-coated Killarney Metals pans.
Materials Needed:
Mild soap and water – For cleaning the surface before repair (Dawn dish soap works perfectly).
Isopropyl alcohol or degreaser – Removes oils and contaminants.
Fine-grit sandpaper (400–600 grit) – Smooths chipped edges for better adhesion.
Color-matched touch-up paint, pen, or spray.
Clear coat (optional but recommended) – Adds protection and shine after repair.
Lint-free cloth – For drying and wiping down the surface.
Nitrile or latex gloves – Protect your hands from solvents and paint.
Safety glasses or goggles – Prevent debris or splashes from reaching your eyes.
Respirator or face mask (N95 or paint-rated) – Protects from inhaling fumes during sanding or painting.
Tip: Always work in a well-ventilated space to avoid fume buildup.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Clean the Area Thoroughly
Start by washing the damaged area with a few drops of dish soap mixed with warm water and a soft, lint-free cloth. This removes surface dirt or debris. Rinse with clean water and dry completely. Next, apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to a clean cloth and gently wipe the area to eliminate any oils or residues that could prevent touch-up paint from bonding.
2. Lightly Sand the Damaged Spot
If bare metal is exposed, gently sand the area using fine-grit sandpaper (400–600 grit). Work in light, even strokes to smooth sharp edges and feather the transition between the exposed steel and surrounding powder coat. This step helps the paint adhere and blend seamlessly. After sanding, wipe away all dust with a clean, dry cloth.
3. Apply Touch-Up Paint or Coating
Using a color-matched touch-up pen, spray, or small fine-tip brush, apply thin, even coats of paint over the damaged area. Avoid applying too much at once—several light coats will look smoother than one heavy layer. Follow the drying times listed on your product before reapplying. Matching the color closely ensures the repair blends with the original finish.
4. Let It Cure Fully
Allow the paint to cure completely before exposing the pan to use. Depending on the product, full curing may take 24 hours or longer.
5. Optional: Apply Clear Coat
For additional protection—especially if your pan is in a high-moisture environment—apply a clear coat after the touch-up paint has cured. This extra layer seals the repaired area, protecting against rust, moisture, and UV exposure. It also helps maintain gloss and durability over time.
Touching up a powder-coated pan is a quick, cost-effective way to extend its service life and keep it looking its best. Whether the scratch came from installation, equipment movement, or daily use, a simple repair can restore both the protection and appearance of your Killarney Metals pan for years to come.
